Attacks and Responses

"The Obama administration refuses to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)."

"Obama wants to force all states to allow same-sex marriages."

  • Repealing the Defense of Marriage Act has nothing to do with state's recognition of marriages. As before, states will decide for themselves whether or not to recognize marriage between gay couples from their own or other states.

"Obama's DOMA decision is unlawful and a form of dictatorship."

  • The President and the Department of Justice have the authority to not defend statutes in court they view as unconstitutional, and this is nothing new -- presidents from Thomas Jefferson to George W. Bush have declined to defend laws they viewed as unconstitutional and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts refused to defend a law when he was the lawyer for the first Bush administration.

"Gay marriage is harmful to children raised by parents of the same sex."

  • Kids raised by parents who are gay are just as healthy and well-adjusted as kids raised by straight parents.
  • Nearly every credible authority on child health and social services -- including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Child Welfare League of America -- has determined that whether a parent is straight or gay has nothing to do with their ability to be a good parent.
  • This is about kids having a safe, stable home with a loving environment that allows them to thrive and succeed.

"Allowing gay couples to marry changes the definition of marriage."

  • Marriage is about committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of one another and be responsible for each other.
  • Allowing gay couples to marry means they can join other couples in upholding the commitment and responsibility of marriage.

"Legalizing gay marriage is the first step toward legalizing bestiality and incest."

  • This kind of talk just goes to show that politicians are trying hard to avoid what this is really about -- allowing gay couples to join other couples in upholding the commitment and responsibility of marriage.

"Gay marriage is an attack on freedom of religion."

  • This law both protects loving committed couples in marriage AND ensures that clergy will continue to decide who they will and will not marry, in accordance with their religious beliefs.
  • Allowing a gay couple to marry at city hall or at a county courthouse means that they will be able to take care of and be responsible for each other, while still ensuring that pastors, priests, and rabbis will continue to have the right to decide who they will and will not marry.

"Letting gays serve openly will weaken our military."

  • With the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, now we can put the focus back where it belongs: on our military mission.
  • At a time when our armed forces are experiencing critical shortages, Don't Ask, Don't Tell forced thousands of qualified service members out of jobs we need.
  • Now we can start using the hundreds of millions of dollars that were being spent to discharge patriotic American troops to support our military instead.
  • An overwhelming majority of service members agree that allowing gay service members to serve openly wouldn't have any negative effects on our military.

"The Employment Non-Discrimination Act will require companies to hire gays."

  • That's nonsense. ENDA is about protecting hardworking Americans from being unjustly fired.
  • Right now in more than half the states, you can be fired for reasons that have nothing to do with your job performance. All hardworking Americans should have a fair chance to earn a living and provide for their families, and not be afraid of being fired for something unrelated to how well they do their job.

"Federal hate crime legislation means that anyone who speaks out against homosexuality will be jailed or fined."

"Being gay is a choice."

  • Being gay or straight is a part of who someone is, as basic as the color of their eyes, or whether they're right or left handed.

"Gay people can change through prayer or therapy."

  • We've been hearing about claims that you can "de-gay" people for years now. Not only has this nonsense been proven not to work, but research has shown that it actually hurts people who try it.

"Schools are brainwashing and indoctrinating our kids with pro-gay teachings."

"Gay men are pedophiles."
